Scott Baker (racing driver)
Scott Mitchell Baker (April 30, 1957, Holland, Michigan – June 23, 2000, Toledo, Ohio) was a second-generation racecar driver. Beginning in 1982 he raced in various late-model series, eventually moving up to the ARCA circuit. Highlights of his ARCA career included five feature wins at Berlin Raceway in the late model division in 1995 and a pole qualifying run at Berlin Raceway in 1999 where he led for 50 laps. Baker also had a pair of top-five finishes at Winchester Speedway in 1997 and 1998. When he was not racing, Baker, a metal fabricator, ran his own business, Baker Metal Products.
Baker was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1957 and graduated from Saugatuck High School in Saugatuck, Michigan in 1975. He served in the United States Navy for six years prior to his race-driving career.
== Death ==
In June 2000 at Toledo Speedway, he was running in eighth position in an ARCA race when his car lost control on the front straightaway and spun backwards into a tire barrier. Baker did not survive the crash. He was 43 years old.
He was the second stock car driver to die that year, and his death preceded Kenny Irwin Jr.'s by a few weeks.
In an autopsy, it was determined that Baker died because the impact of the crash caused his head and neck to strain the arteries that carried oxygen to the brain. His safety equipment was undamaged.
